O Sugar! Tips to cut back on your sugar intake!!

Both newspaper and television coverage today likened sugar to the new tobacco! At Truly Simple Foods, we recognise that too much sugar is bad for health and has been linked to obesity, diabetes and heart disease (to name a few). Here are a few simple tips to help you cut back on your sugar intake.

Ways to reduce your sugar intake:

1. Don’t add it to your food or drink – though it it obvious, it does need to be mentioned. This is the easiest way to cut back as you have full control of what does and doesn’t go in. If you cannot go cold turkey; put some serious effort into reducing the amount you use; even if it’s only by a teaspoon or two!

2. Read the package – pre-packaged food is so easy and convenient but don’t put convenience before your health! Take time to read the label and understand what it is actually saying to you. When you read the ingredients list, remember that sugar has many names including;” Corn Syrup, Dextrose, Molasses, Fructose, Glucose, Sucrose, Rice Syrup, Glucose-Frustose Syrup” and many more! If any of the first three ingredients are sugar or any of its aliases, chose another product

3. Stop drinking sugar – there is so much hidden sugar in drinks that it will surprise you when you think about it. All those empty calories in cordials, energy drinks, fruit juices,  and not forgetting the sugar we add to our tea/ coffee or hot chocolate! Drink water or a green tea, it’s much better for your body and you will soon see a difference in your skin, hair and nails.

4. Eat Truly Simple Foods! – another obvious one but we thought we should throw it in there! We do not add any sugar to our products but use fruit to naturally sweeten Sun-dried Tomato & Sweet Chilli Sauce and Coconut Curry & Spinach Sauce. Also, our tomato sauces are based on Sun-dried Tomato which is naturally sweeter. We do have demerera sugar in our Caribbean Jerk and Barbecue Seasonings – that’s there to help caramelise your meat!
